Thank You, Peterborough!
The Peterborough Green Party of Ontario constituency association and candidate Miriam Stucky would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our many volunteers, members, and supporters for making this the best Green Party campaign in Peterborough to date! Unofficial results of the October 10 provincial election show that 4,444 people voted Green in Peterborough riding! This is almost triple the 1605 votes from the 2003 provincial election and over a thousand more than the 3205 Green votes in the 2006 federal election. Peterborough is one of the top 20 Green ridings in the province in terms of total number of votes. Way to go, Peterborough!
Provincially, the Green Party gained a record 8% of the popular vote with 355,041 votes. No other party has gained 5%, or attracted almost one quarter of a million more voters, since 2003. In addition, 20 Green candidates moved into third place in their ridings. This is an unprecedented success for the Green Party and its supporters. Because of your support and hard work, the Green Party of Ontario continues to gain momentum with every election.
Scroll down this page for a Green breakdown of the election results.

Lawn Signs
Our dedicated volunteers will be collecting signs in the coming days, now that the election is over. We will be able to re-use many of the signs in the future. If you wish to drop your sign off on a trip into town, please call us at (705) 743-3095 and let us know. You can deliver it to 512 Park St. North, just South of Macdonnel, kitty-corner to Ed’s Music on the Jackson Creek. Please leave your sign on our front porch and we’ll be happy to store it for future use!
Aiming Higher
Only 1% of our food is grown locally
1% of agriculture is organic
1% of our neighbourhoods are walkable
1% of our energy is renewable
1% of our health care budget is devoted to prevention
We can do better!
It’s time the political leadership in Ontario focused on reducing urban sprawl, on real support for renewable energy, and on truly tough measures to safeguard the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink. It’s time to curb carbon emissions, to start paying for what we burn.
The Green Party of Ontario has developed an integrated set of policies designed to transform our current wasteful way of living into a sustainable one so that we can live healthier today and leave a healthy Ontario to our children and grandchildren. These issues are still important, not just at election time. Peruse the Green Party of Ontario platform at www.gpo.ca and encourage others to do so. Write your MPP, Jeff Leal, and encourage him to adopt more sustainable policy!
The Referendum on Mixed-Member Proportional
A broad-based, gender-balanced Citizens Committee consisting of one adult from each of Ontario’s 103 ridings recommended that we update our electoral system to join the rest of the democratic world in proportional representation. Scotland, Germany and New Zealand are among the countries currently using the “Mixed Member Proportional” system to distribute seats in the legislature according to the percentage of popular vote.
This change would mean that every vote counts in determining the makeup of the legislature. It would also mean greater accountability, an end to “false majorities” that allow parties with less than 50% of the vote to ram through their own agendas, and better representation for all Ontario citizens.
MMP received 35.5% support in Peterborough. With 8.0% of the popular vote, the Green Party would have sent 10 representatives to the legislature. An issue this important will often take more than one referendum to pass. Let’s work to educate ourselves and others about the possibilities of changing our electoral system to fairly represent all people. Next time, we’ll be ready!
You can find out more about the proposed changes to our electoral system at www.voteformmp.ca or www.fairvotecanada.org.
